To know what separates a successful person from one who is unsuccessful, you should first examine what the word “success” means to you. Sleep More

If your plan is to be highly successful, it all starts with sleep. “An overwhelming 89 percent of self-made millionaire[s] sleep seven or eight hours each night, or more,” cnbc.com reports. Now you have a legitimate excuse to sleep in late this weekend.

Quit Multitasking

Balancing a full schedule that requires switching back and forth between tasks will certainly keep you busy but it’s not the best use of your time. Inc.com explains, “Research says it’s [multitasking] a myth and can be damaging to our brains. You end up splitting your focus over many tasks. [You will lose] focus, lowering the quality of your work and taking longer to hit your goals.” Instead, you should break your goal down into smaller steps and completely finish one before moving onto the next. “The most successful people are very patient and live by the motto ‘one step at a time’,” the article adds.

Read Often

Highly-successful people are, as it turns out, avid readers. According to Business Insider, “Billionaire investor Warren Buffett, for example, spends 80% of his day reading.” Now, it’s probably pretty unlikely that you can devote that much time to a hobby like reading. However, just spending a little bit of time with a book each day has its benefits and what you read isn’t as important as the act of reading itself. Though, cnbc.com explains, “Most [highly successful people] do not read for entertainment; they prefer biographies, history, and self-help books.”

Eat Well and Exercise

Much like reading exercises the mind, other parts of the body need to be exercised in order for you to be successful. Highly successful people not only exercise regularly but they also eat at regular intervals. These healthy habits are intentional. Inc.com elaborates, “It’s no coincidence. Successful people value themselves highly and invest in their own well-being.” If your goal is to become one of these highly successful people, creating good eating habits and exercise goals is a great place to start.

Plan Ahead

Highly successful people don’t leave their success up to chance, and neither should you. Each day should be a mix of being fully present, that is, practicing mindfulness, and also planning for the near future. Highly successful people don’t just schedule important tasks like business meetings, they also make sure to set time aside for relaxation. They definitely do not subscribe to the “all work and no play” mentality.
