Shot of apple cider vinegar, anyone? Yuck, you may say. Yet, every morning, I start my day by taking a shot glass out of my kitchen cabinet. I fill it up with that cloudy brown liquid and I scrunch my face as I take a straight shot of the grossest thing I have ever tasted, apple cider vinegar (ACV). This routine is repeated every morning, and every morning I question why am I doing this to myself? I do it because apple cider vinegar has amazing health benefits.
*note: 1-2 tablespoons of ACV in a 8 ounce glass of water is recommended to dilute the taste.
Balance your body’s pH levels
Apple cider vinegar is known to be very acidic. However, the body reacts well to ACV because the acidity in ACV has an alkaline effect. We want our bodies to have a healthy acidic and alkaline balance. Too much acid can lead to problems with our pH levels, making our bodies more at risk for infection and inflammation. The alkaline in ACV will fight Candida (yeast) which will lead to a healthy stomach and vagina! That’s right, NO more yeast infections!
You smell? ACV will take care of that
10% of the world has overactive sweat glands and I’m pretty sure I am one of them. It will be freezing outside and I’m sweating, just on my right armpit. Is this normal? Clinical deodorants will help, but they contain aluminum—which is linked to Alzheimer’s Disease and Breast Cancer. I wanted to try a more natural route to keep my sweaty pits in check but all the organic deodorants I’ve tried did NOT do the trick. I discovered an arm-pit detox through Wellness Mama. Katie Wells recommends “a mix of water, bentonite, and apple cider vinegar”. It is a wonderful holistic alternative to manage body odor. In addition, you can also use ACV for foot odor and bad breath as well.
Containing high levels of vitamin C, ACV helps to reduce inflammation in the body. What I found that works for me is mixing water, cayenne pepper, lemon, and a shot of ACV. I also add some pineapple juice for sweetener. Fun fact: pineapple is also great for inflammation. Personally, I feel that this concoction helps to alleviate my sinus headaches about half the time. So, that’s half the time that I don’t need to take aspirin.
Get that summer body
Known to aid in regulating blood sugar, ACV may help people who suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes. Drinking a glass of water with 2 teaspoons of ACV will help you feel full throughout the day, reducing your sugar cravings and speeding up your metabolism. According to Draxe.com, “In a 2005 study from the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that vinegar consumption with a high-carb meal resulted in participants eating/drinking 200 to 275 fewer calories throughout the rest of the day.”
In Health Remedies Journal, they discuss how ACV is a quick cure for sore throats. By gargling two ounces of ACV and two ounces of warm water, the acid in ACV will kill the bacteria in the back of the throat. It is also great for colds! The acid will reduce bacteria and the potassium in ACV will help thin the mucus causing you to feel congested.
Great for your skin
According to Wellness Mama, mix 50% water and 50% ACV together to make a skin toner (you may choose to dilute the solution with more water, per your preference). It firms the skin and is good for those who suffer from acne. Or, if you have a little pimple put ACV on it the night before and watch it disappear.
There are so many benefits to drinking apple cider vinegar. So suck it up and add a shot of it to your everyday routine.
